In short he started out as a rebel against the government, and gained a lot of popularity after being released from jail when a new president arrived.
He then marched around campaigning until he became president. As president he was way less crooked and cut his pay and gave more to the people inclding more rights for women. He was pals with extremist Fidel Castro and hated the shit out of America but hey we can't all be perfect.
He was elected to a fourth term shortly before his death and that is about the jist of it. I think he was a good leader for what he did for his people.
