21 y old guy 10 story building suicide 1 mile from my house - Insanecowposse - 11-02-2010 Macomb Daily Staff Writer Police say they were unable to make contact with man on top of senior apartment building HAZEL PARK â Police say they are investigating how a 21-year-old Hazel Park who died after he jumped from a 10-story senior apartment building gained access to the roof. When officers arrived they found a stairwell door to the roof locked and had to call a maintenance man to open the door with a key, said Hazel Park Police Chief David Niedermeier said. "We believe he may have entered another stairwell and gained access to the roof through some heating and cooling ducts," he said. "It's tragic a 21-year-old man had to die in this manner." The Macomb Daily is not publishing the man's name. An unidentified caller notified police at 9:50 a.m. Sunday that the man was on the roof of the Hazelcrest Place Apartments off of John R just north of Nine Mile Road. Police arrived and one officer spotted the man on the east side of the buildingÃs roof. When the man noticed the police car he went to the west side of the roof and jumped, police said. ì"We were never able to make contact with him," said Hazel Park Police Lt. Michael Kolp. The man lived with his family and girlfriend about a quarter mile from the apartment building, police said. Niedermeier said the man was wearing a rosary and left a note behind on the roof. "The note indicated he intended to commit suicide but gave no reason," Niedermeier said. "His parents said he had never threatened or attempted suicide in the past." However, the man's girlfriend told investigators the man had mentioned suicide but exhibited no actions or behavior to suggest he was going to kill himself, police said. The man had no identification on him and was taken to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, where he was later pronounced dead. Hazel Park police called on Royal Oak police to bring a cell-phone size fingerprint reading device to the hospital. The device, called Bluecheck, identified the man through his fingerprints, police said. The Oakland County Medical Examiner is doing an autopsy that will include a toxicology report to determine whether the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. |
