so youre saying that it was just there.. then grew and grew.. nothing created it? they say the big bang theory created the universe.. who made the elements to create that "big bang"?

That's why its a theory, it's not proven. But I mean, mountains aren't just miracles* or anything. It's two tectonic plates pushing together and the force makes the ground rise.

who made the plates? they didnt just appear out of nowhere is what im saying. i cant just say.. hmm.. i think ill just make a sandwich appear out of thin air..

The Earth's molten core recycles it, basically. When it pushes them together, one end gets pushed down and melts, and the the other that is pushing against, slowly comes out. It's a veryyyy slow process. Didn't you take Earth Science? I failed that shit and still know. Like really, do you believe Something just put the Earth here? Damn.

how did he know how to make carbon? or oxygen? or combine them?
how do you get that.. i said a higher power. i didnt say a giant invisible person.. lol im not even saying i know how the shit happened. but i cant believe that shit was just here, then formed into fucking rocks and we grew from stagnant water.. where did all that shit come from in the first place?

Nobody knows, and none of us here have anything close to an answer other than arrogant assertions of our ideals.

what's your view on.. - The Professa - 08-02-2012

I was brought up to be catholic, but that didn't leave me satisfied. I read, spoke w ppl, and dabbled in various philosophy in regard to religion. I think it's widely misused these days, atleast in our society.
I agree w what XIII said about the moral guidance for some. But i find it interesting that ppl wouldn't want to just be good/happy on their own w out some threat of punishment to help them along.
as odd as it may sound I'm a vipassana mediation student, so that's about as spiritual as I get.

I don't believe the intelligent design thing. I've got a fair handle on the current theories for what sparked the big bang from school, but not fair enough where it's worth bringing up here since I'm still chewing on it myself.
I lold @ "so you don't believe in uv?" awesome <3

Another thing I wanted to add for discussion is my buddy (philosophy major) always gets worked up about using the words "faith" an "belief" to describe how we feel about something. He says any evidence as at all in support of a faith/belief makes it something you can no longer have faith in; to have faith there can't be any proof or evidence of whatever it is at all.

Re: what's your view on.. - LuckyNumbrXIII - 08-02-2012

Everyone's brains work differently. There are plenty of things in the world that I can visualize in my head. The existence of a higher power/energy is one of these things. Some people don't see it that way, or just plain don't like to think about these things. Either way, there's only one way to find out....

Re: what's your view on.. - evulninja - 08-02-2012

see you are all twisting my words all backwards.. im not questioning how the earth formed or how all this formed or that.. all that has been scientifically proven.. im just saying i dont believe that all these elements were just here then started forming together for no reason. what also did they teach you in science class.. "every action has an equal and opposite reaction?" that being said.. what action caused the equal or opposite reaction to cause the universe to form? things just dont fuckin appear from nowhere..

Re: what's your view on.. - fghtffyrdmns - 08-02-2012

XIII is right, these things usually go nowhere. Agree to disagree as always. Thumbs Up

Re: what's your view on.. - evulninja - 08-02-2012

im just posting my opinions. thats all they are, opinions. you can call me stupid all you want but its not gonna change my mind.

Re: what's your view on.. - fghtffyrdmns - 08-02-2012

Never called you stupid bro. NOVA does have an episode about theories on how life started, if you wanted to watch it.

Also, my miracles picture stopped working. Damn hotlinking. :(

Re: what's your view on.. - LuckyNumbrXIII - 08-02-2012

Not calling you stupid. Hell, I'm one of the believers in God. I'll be called stupid, naive, told I'm being raped by priests, etc, etc.

It's what Christians do, brah... get persecuted. #ChicFilA

Re: what's your view on.. - evulninja - 08-02-2012

i accept the fact that they are theories, same as my theory.. thats why im agnostic.. at least i think thats what category fits me best.

Re: what's your view on.. - LuckyNumbrXIII - 08-02-2012

Agnostic is a subdivision.

You can be Agnostic-theist, Agnostic-atheist.

I prefer to consider myself a Agnostic Christian Pantheist.

what's your view on.. - The Professa - 08-02-2012

Actually, things appear out of nowhere and exist in multiple places at the same time, bruh. Called quantum mechanics. ;)
There's also heisenburgs uncertainty to deal with as well. Which makes things kind of a pain in the ass at times- but I like a challenge.
There's ALOT of weird shit that happens in qm, and that's the stuff we need to talk about what sparked the big bang. I guess without that, understanding that entropy or a system always increases. That is to say, that the "randomness" increases- you go from no random to more randomness. Entropy isn't referred to as theory these days either, a it's part of the 2nd law of Thrm.dynamics it's officially a natural law.
The "elements" didn't exist prior to the big bang but came about after, the stuff that's in the universe has always been here, it's just different.
I know that's a pretty butchered explanation as far as trying to answer your question, I hope it helped a little tho.
Sry for poor post quality I'm on the rail on my way to my car, just had a crazy quiz. I'm kinda fried, haha.

Re: what's your view on.. - LuckyNumbrXIII - 08-02-2012

So are there other universes? If so, what separates us? What is space, is there only one "space"? Can we cross from one space to another?

This leads to the possibility of infinite randomness.... space, time, other elements, other intelligent life.

Re: what's your view on.. - evulninja - 08-02-2012

dont get me started on other life... lol

I can't tell if you're genuinely asking or being rhetorical :-/ lol
To my knowledge the theory of multiple universes, which comes up quickly in qm, is widely accepted. I don't think I can answer what separates us in a way that'll leave anyone satisfied, so I'm leaving it alone.
Space is not what most people think it is, nor is time; and its relationship w mass and energy isnt what ppl generally intuitively know offhand. It's actually stuff called space-time, and it's pretty cool. Simply put its a four dimensional system, but I know that answer leaves something to be desired. There's a lot of popular info about it available if you want more info, here's a link to a physics forum discussion about it that may/may not be of help. Of the popular books I read, I like Brian greene's fabric of the cosmos. He explains things in a way that's easy for ppl to visualize and begin to understand, check it out :)

maybe michio kaku's works and research would be of interest as well. hawking's got some good popular books as well, he's into m theory, his most recent The Grand Design explains some stuf pretty well (tho greene's was an easier read IMO)

Here's the link I mentioned http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=395482

I am currently not allowed to talk about religion on this board due to what happened last time it was brought up (refer to the "fuck your god" thread for details) lol.

Re: what's your view on.. - LuckyNumbrXIII - 08-02-2012

I was being rhetorical. Physics is a passion of mine. That is... theoretical physics, and universe theories.

I'm also trying to sway this convo away from "hurr is dere a god or is dere a no god?" because that shit's dumb.

I think the discussions these questions bring out are way more interesting.
