I still think it was a cyst, it was just too big for a zit.
Quick google shows cyst surgery on people with lumps exactly like this.
That explains the foul smell they talk about also.

It could have also been just a nasty abscess. Ugh, sometimes we pop and drain some at work. The pus looks like cottage cheese and smells horrific.
