Lending a hand to the wee gang bangers - CranialEntropy - 09-10-2009

So applied to volunteer in this program today and really hope I get accepted. It's based entirely on this concept to help the kids who everyone else has given up on. The highschool they focus on has a 38% graduation rate.

Here are the qualification the freshmen kids in highschool need to have:

1) A gpa lower than 1.0 (based on a 4.0 scale, so it has to be lower than a D average)
2) Have at least 5 items from this crazy list of obstacles (depression, been to juvy, have parents that are dead or incarcerated or alcoholics or drug attics or drug dealers, been in a gang or been dealing drugs, a history of violence, abusive parents, involved in a pregnancy)
3) Of the remaining list they go to the principal and ask for the names of the kids they've had the most problems with

The final people get a team of 8 volunteers assigned to them to help them out with a variety of activities from studying to hanging out to improving conditions at home (ie keeping there houses from foreclosure, getting their parents and themselves jobs if necessary), So far the program has never had a kid who entered it not go on to college.

This is something totally outside as my comfort zone, but I'm really psyched to be a part of it and what I'll learn from it.

inb4 you'll get shanked and die.

Hahaha that sounds like the school district I grew up in. But it sounds really interesting to be a part of it. No matter what, nobody could say you didn't make a difference in the world if you participated in this.

Somehow i foresee you leading them down a deeper darker path than what you should be leading them to.
